Preventing employee injuries

Risk Tip of the Week - logo

Many employers think that exposure to hazardous materials or use of dangerous power tools causes the greatest number of injuries in a workplace. However, according to the Insurance Information Institute, in most years the three top causes of injuries in the workplace are: over exertion or injuries caused from excessive lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, carrying or throwing of an object; falls on ground level; and bodily reaction or injuries from bending, climbing, slipping or tripping without falling.

Employees should be trained to recognize hazards in the workplace that contribute to these injuries and report them promptly so they can be corrected.

Any near miss, first-aid incident, accident or other workplace injury-related event should be investigated by a team that includes management and workers. Log the incidents, so you can spot any patterns of incidents that might require special attention.

An active safety program that prevents injuries to your employees has a positive impact on your workers’ compensation rates.
