PPI for construction outstrips rise in overall index

The producer price index for finished goods climbed 1.4 percent before seasonal adjustment (1.2 percent seasonally adjusted) in July and 9.8 percent over 12 months, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Tuesday. The PPI for inputs to construction industries—a measure of costs of materials used in all types of projects plus items consumed by contractors, such as diesel fuel—rose 2 percent for the month and 12 percent over 12 months. By segment, the increases were greatest for highway and street construction, 3.8 percent and 21 percent; followed by other heavy construction, 2.1 percent and 17 percent; nonresidential building, 1.9 percent and 12 percent; multi-unit residential, 1.3 percent and 8.5 percent; and single-unit residential, 1.4 percent and 7.1 percent.
